Railroads, Growth Stocks of the 19th Century, Are Hot Again. The proposed merger of the Candian Pacifc and Kansas City Southern railroads is showing just how valuable America’s freight rail network is. England’s New Bus Strategy Faces Challenge to Get Passengers on Board. In 1986 Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher privatized all the UK buses except for those in London. In the intervening decades, bus ridership outside of London declined by 45% and increased by 80% in London. The current UK PM, Boris Johnson, is aiming to reverse this trend by letting local authorities choose how closely they want to work with bus operators, including moving to a fully franchising system under which it allocates the routes, similar to what London has. Johnson sees the new bus strategy as part of ā€œleveling upā€ UK infrastructure.
